Pro Bono; Mirandize; Nolo Contendere
Is law confusing? Do you want to know what is what? Two sites popular with searchers are:
Find Law, which covers consumer and business law and answers many common questions. In the Public Section are many articles and FAQs on subjects from employee rights to elder rights to real estate to wills.
Nolo's Legal Encyclopedia. Nolo has been publishing legal forms and legal guidebooks for the general consumer for years. On their web page, they have a good encyclopedia for finding out about various legal issues. They also have a legal dictionary.

Urban Legends
Reference librarians get questions on urban legends all the time. The Discovery Channel actually has a show about them. Which are true and which are false? Ah, there is the rub.
The Urban Legends Reference Page is a good source for these. They are divided into categories, but you can also use a search box. As a librarian I really like that they list their sources. Did typhoid Mary really pass on typhoid? Do people hit each other on Boxing Day? Now you'll have to look!

Extra, Extra Read All About It!
Newspapers play an important part of our lives. I noticed people on my way to work reading the headlines in the newspaper boxes on the street. If you would like to read national or international papers online try:
Internet Public Library's newspaper page
Ecola's News Directory

Research 101
How do you write a quality research paper? The folks at the University of Washington have created an online tutorial, Research 101, to help students. The process is broken into 6 topics
*The Basics
*Info Cycles
*Topics
*Searching
*Finding
*Evaluating
Under each topic there are short pieces to help walk through the process. For example, Topics helps the student pick a topic by looking at objectives, topic sources, asking questions, broadening, narrowing, selecting keywords or concepts, broadening/narrowing vocabulary, a quiz on this section.
Give it try!

ACT/SAT/FAFSA
It's time for the abbreviations that mean college. Send Your Child to College. This is a great site for parents and students. It covers:
*Selecting a college
*Scholarships and financial aid
*Admissions and getting into the college of your choice
*Doing well on the ACT, SAT etc
Jan A. Maas, a librarian at the Brooklyn Public Library, works to keep this up to date, so check back during the school year for new information.
