PDFs
This isn't really a reference tip as such, but we have patrons who come into the library working on resumes. Sometimes it is nice to be able to send your resume electronically as a PDF rather than a Word document, so that it can be sent looking exactly the way you want it. However, buying Adobe's PDF product for just one application is expensive. There are some free versions out there, but they watermark your product so everyone know you are using a free version.
Last week Roger Chang, yes, Roger Chang again, talked about a free PDF creator that is also free of watermarks. To see his article on CutePDF Writer
.
If you need to start at the beginning with job search skills and creating the resume, check out The Riley Guide, a classic.

Intials, intials!
In the past I have bemoaned the boom of intitials that stand for words I don't know and gave a link to the Acronym Finder. Last night I was watching Call for Help on TechTV and Roger Chang gave me solution number 2 - Acronym Genie.
Acronym Genie is a free download that will help you with acronyms as you work. Read more about it and get the download link in the article. Accronym Genie by Dan Mitchell.

Surfing around
I was over at RefDesk.com, which has some of my favourite quick reference tool links. They had a site of the day I hadn't tried Time Magazine's Top 100 people of the Century. A good place to look for people for paper topics or to just argue about their choices.

Law Questions
We often have people in the library looking for answers to basic legal questions. I just finished showing someone FindLaw. FindLaw has been around the Internet for quite some time. It has a broad audience with information for legal professionals, law students, businesses and the general public. The big plus at FindLaw is the organization. It is easy to navigate and find what you want. Give it a try.

Women's History Month
The Librarian's Index to the Internet has compiled a great list of links about women. Many deal with various issues in women's lives, but there are also links to information on famous women. It is a good resource for women and students. Check out the LII's Women Theme page

Studies on library users
Many patrons use the library and libraries try to research the needs of users. One neglected group of patrons has been Peeps. Just because they have fluffy brains doesn't mean that they don't have legitimate library needs. The Millikin Library has done a study on the research needs of Peeps.
